Swamp Creek Watershed Update
Work has begun to install Agricultural Best Management Practices
within the Williamson Swamp Creek
Watershed in Washington County. The Pine Country Council received
a $343,400 grant from the Georgia Environmental Protection
Division to implement this project. Currently 25 landowners
have qualified to receive cost share payments for implementing
Best Management Practices on their farm. Practices such as
pasture planting, cover crops, heavy use areas, alternative
watering facilities, and animal waste facilities will be installed
using grant funds. All of the participating landowners will
be supporting the project goal of reducing the fecal coliform
bacteria and sediment load in Williamson Swamp Creek.
The Pine Country Council has been awarded a
$353,400 EPA Section 319 Grant to be used in the
Williamson Swamp Creek Watershed in Washington County. The
objective of the project is to install Agricultural Best Management
Practices (BMPs) that reduce non -point source pollution,
with a special emphasis on livestock waste runoff. Producers
within the watershed will be given the opportunity to request
financial and technical assistance for installation of BMPs.
The Washington County NRCS staff will assist the RC&D
Council by providing the technical assistance needed to implement
the project. This project is directed at reversing trends
of increasing numbers and miles of impaired stream segments
in the Upper Ogeechee River Watershed by reducing pollutant
loads within Williamson Swamp Creek with the installation
of Agricultural Best Management Practices.
